Fairy tale - Cinderella

Exploring the meaning behind fairy tales

We often think of fairy tales as only childhood stories, yet remnants of fairy tales permeate our every day culture. The idea of finding a Prince Charming through television shows like “The Bachelor” with the promise of a rose and a happily ever after ending, or the many film adaptations of Beauty and the Beast, Cinderella, and Snow White.

The toughest lady in the Wild West and other American folktales

Sally Ann Thunder Ann Whirlwind was the prettiest, sassiest, and toughest woman in the Wild West. She fought alligators, lived with a family of bears, and could out-run and out-wrestle any of the boys in Tennessee by the age of seven. She even married Davey Crocket, king of the wild frontier, after helping him out of a tree with a lasso made of rattlesnakes.

Loyalty, honor, and a steady hand in times of uncertainty—these were the attributes that defined his silver screen heroes, icons like John Wayne and Gary Cooper who lifted his spirit and captivated the imagination of friends and neighbors at the Majestic Theater.

Anderson and Samsel

Kate Anderson ’09: Songwriter for Frozen special, Between the Lines musical

After decades of musical training, Kate Anderson ’09 was finally amid Broadway’s elite. Shaking hands, sharing laughs, championing the theatre—it was everything that she wished for…

And yet nothing that she wanted.

“I wanted to be the one who introduced herself as the songwriter, not as the fundraiser,” confessed the Gettysburg College music and creative writing grad.

Tick, Tock: What is the meaning of time?

The earth revolves around the sun in 365.24 days, marking a year in a human life. The alarm sounds at 6 a.m., alerting one that it’s time to wake up. There are the well-known idioms that “time flies” or “time stands still.” Time is money. Time is on your side. We organize our lives around time. But, what is it?
